Great for fast and scrumptious takeout. Try the drunken noodles with tofu! Delicious. Big enough for two people to share, or one person if you don't mind a food coma. Also excellent is the Tom Yum soup special. And the people are very nice.

If you're looking for the McDonald's of the Thai food world, then this is your place. The food took less than 5 minutes to get and was fine tasting...but not the place I'd go if I were craving Thai. It was ok priced, but I've had better/cheaper food at Simply Thai in Sandy. The food was generally bland, even after dousing it in sriracha. The brown rice was very good, so that's a plus! Go here if you need to order/consume Thai food in under 10 minutes, otherwise, there's better options in town.

Wow, would give negative stars if possible. First of all, it cost like $20. Second, the portions were too small. Totally a ripoff. I ordered the Pad See Ew, but they just me drunken noodle.WHY? I got about 4 pieces of tofu, and it was smushy and barely cooked. It was extremely greasy, and contained no garlic, no spice, no basil. How is that drunken noodle? I also ordered the two combo plate, Yellow Curry and Massaman, but they only gave me Yellow Curry. The Yellow Curry just tasted like watered down sugar sauce that was stained yellow. Also, I got approximately 5 tiny cubes of tofu for this DOUBLE order! WTF? You know you're in trouble when you're adding siracha and soy sauce on your second bite. The egg roll was soggy. I tried calling to let them to let them know they messed up my order and couldn't get anyone on the phone. Overpriced, I should have just paid 20 bucks to a dude on the street to slap me in the face, because my order felt like a slap in the face. Also, I'm still hungry. DO NOT GO HERE. Go to MyThai if you can. Same price, if not cheaper and the food is MUCH better.

We were in Salt Lake City last September 2014 with 2 daughters and 7 Grandkids. After doing Temple Square, we were on the hunt for late lunch/early dinner. What a fantastic find. We all love Thai food. This is what you call a hole in the wall. So today, we are back. Just myself and husband. First place to go was here. Still excellent.

Ekamai Thai is a nice little spot that is perfect for a quick bite to eat or if you want to grab some takeout. There isn't much sitting room, so don't go there expecting it to be a sit down type of restaurant with waiter service. During my visit I tried the Mussamun Curry with chicken and Curry Dumplings. The flavor of the Mussamun was okay. I've had better and the chicken pieces were pretty dry. Unlike the curry, we had to wait a few minutes for the dumplings since they had to be prepared after we placed our order. The curry sauce that the dumplings were served with was on the sweet side, but I enjoyed adding some Sriracha sauce to spice it up a bit. I might return again to try some of the other curries since Thai food is one of my favorites, but I'm not in any rush to do so.

YASSS! I've gotten take out from ekamai plenty of times and it has aways been good. I dined in for the first time the other night and tried some new things that were all amazing! The would definitely recommend the thai basil and chile and the bamee moo. The thai iced tea was also super good.

Just ok Thai food here. If I'm in a hurry for lunch, I'll hit Ekamai but there are much better Thai food restaurants in Salt Lake. Their entree portions are also really small, except for the rice, which is way too much.

I came here for dinner during my trip to salt lake and this was the closest restaurant that wasn't packed near the convention center. Its a cute little hole in the wall...and I mean little. There's really no seating inside and it barely fits 10 people just standing. The grill also is quite tiny. I wonder how they manage when there is a line. Anyhow, big things come in little packages. I ordered some drunken noodles and they were awesome! Made fresh and delicious. *Drool* The service was okay. You kind of just order and wait and since there were only two people making the food and taking orders, they didn't really check up on my table. The price for the noodles was a tad on the expensive side in my opinion. All in all, it was great food and a nice experience. I'd probably go back here if I'm in town.

To be honest, SLC has much better Thai places than this. I was recommended this place by co-worker who raved but what I experienced, will never bring me back. They seemed to be out of many things, including a certain wine and brown rice. The server was unsympathetic about this and didn't seem to want to make it right. She was also slow and a little rude. The place was cramped and has an awkward door when you walk in that seems to swing open and almost hit a barrier they have up. The food I ordered was borderline gross and too expensive for what I got. I think I'll stick to Chanon tie on 9th and 9th for takeout.

  • Tawnee W.

I'm kind of surprised about the high ratings. Maybe I need to give it another shot, but my food was bland and everything was soggy and overcooked. It was very quick (they have everything made beforehand (hence the soggy and overcooked food) and reasonably priced for downtown SLC, but there are sooo many amazing food places just up the block.

  • Ruben A.

The food was fine. Nothing to write home about. I had the combo with two entrees and rice. I had the beef massaman curry and the pork and bamboo shoot stir fry. The food seemed a little under-flavored. It seemed lile the standard Thai food you would get at any generic Thai food place. The portions were pretty small too. The plate was mostly brown rice and two small scoops of entree.

There is no better place for quick, cheap, great tasting Thai food. I usually get my fast Thai food from a place near where I work. I was working late and really hungry, but decided to hold off and walk over to Ekamai on my way home. I'm really glad I did. I've been there twice now and have tried the Yellow, Green, Red and Massaman curry. They are all fantastic. The brown rice is exceptional and is much better quality than you will get at any other quick Thai place (and honestly better than any Thai restaurant that I've been to). They include an egg roll that is fantastic and the portions are a good size. For ~$9 you can get a 2 entree combo with rice. The food is served in one of those styrofoam containers that you are probably familiar with, and it's completely stuffed. I left very satisfied and came back a couple days later with my girlfriend, who also loved it. Indoor seating is very limited, but there are tables outside in front of the Ekamai and also up the stairs. Also, try out their Sriacha. They have the normal bottle that every loves, but also a different brand that I hadn't seen before, and really prefer now.

Bland (had to add LOTS of sriracha and soy sauce) + Bad service/possibly dishonest (I asked for a 1-item combo, she asked if I wanted a 2-item combo, I told her, "no, the 1-item combo please," and she made and charged me for the 2-item without saying anything...I didn't notice til I'd already paid as the screen she showed me didn't (I think) give a total) = Never going back.

  • James H.

Service was quick and the food fresh. And although it may just be the "American" in me, the portion sizes felt a bit small. Don't confuse steamed rice for sticky rice...2 very different textures and flavors. Rookie mistake.

I came back again. Hello luvah, indeed. This time was even more intimate as it was the off-hour and we sorta had the place to ourselves. Pineapple curry was the name of the game, and it delivered a slightly sweet, slightly spicy flavor that was perfect to offset the entire day of sweet sweetness we had been enjoying. It was also a great preface to going next door to share a waffle. That's the right way to do this: share some curry & rice, then share a waffle next door. Hello luvah.

    (5)
  • Karsten B.

Had the yellow curry- very mediocre. Tough meat and not much flavor. Just go to Bruges next door- you know you want to.

Love this place!! It's been my go to for a quick lunch spot for a couple years now. Prices are decent to good and the food is great. Always get the brown rice(Which is purple) Favorite dishes are: Green Curry Plate Massuman Beef Yellow Curry

  • Darin B.

First off I love a good Green Curry but hate rice, this can be a problem at most Thai places because I have to make a special order, but not at Ekamai, that have a delicious treat on the menu, the Green Curry Pasta. The Green Curry Pasta is a fantastic green curry in a bed of pasta obviously, it has a great balance of sweetness and spicy heat. I ask for extra sauce because I just can't get enough. The serving size is nice, the only downside is the price is a little steep.

I LOVE ! The staff was very amiable and the waitress was friendly and prompt.

Based on yelp reviews, I might have had higher expectations... Regardless, the food was terrible. We got 3 different kinds of curry, a meat and vegetable dish: all with sticky rice and 2 puffs. The mung bean puff was Ok. The rest was awful. 2 of the microwaved sticky rice rumps were undercooked. All three kinds (musical, red and yellow) curry were the worst I've ever had. I've eaten in Thailand and many other thai places all over the states. I am just puzzled how this place got 4 stars. If you know what good thai food is, avoid this place. Total waste of my money, time and palate.

Advertise for pad thai and even have picture on there door for it. They don't serve it. Also not friends and difficult to communicate with not speaking English. Food was not impressive w no flavor. :(

I love this place! I could drink the curry sauces in a 44 oz. refillable mug from Maverick. It's darn tasty with veggies, meat and rice, too. Oh and the mango sticky rice is soooooo good!

  • Drew H.

This place has my favorite drunken noodles. Their curries are great too, but I usually go for the noodles and the curry dumplings. It's great for take out. They also have two locations to make it easy if your running around

  • Abir D.

Very bland food. Thai food should be filled with spices and flavor and this establishment's food lacked both. Will not be returning

The drunken noodles and the Thai tea are both amazing, it's a bit more than I like to spend but the service here is totally worth it.

Came here on a whim during lunch one day when I worked downtown and I must say, for fast food Thai, it was actually pretty good. I chatted up the owner in Thai and she customized my plate a little bit to make it a little more authentic. Definitely give it a try out; especially if you're in a Thai fix and have limited time.

  • Ky H.

The gentleman was so nice and he gave me a lot of massaman curray. He filled it to the brim with meat. The meat is tender. Yum!

  • Lisa M.

We've been coming here for years now. Recently they added some new things to the menu. Loving the Drunken Noodle. The potatoes in the yellow curry last night were a little more undercooked than i like but hey it happens and suppose some people might prefer it that way.

  • Brittney Y.

I ordered the food for delivery and it showed up with half of the order missing. When I called to let them know, they said that they were closed and it wasn't their problem. It was pretty mediocre food for more money than it was really worth (even if I had received my full order). I wouldn't order from them again.

A solid thai cuisine in downtown Salt Lake- the perfect place to stop on a Saturday after a nice stroll through the Farmer's Market. The trendy atmosphere and good food pair well for a fun time out, and at a good value. The upper-level patio area is a great spot to kick back on the weekends, and having Bruge's right next door is a plus if you're looking for a tasty dessert, afterwards.

  • Merrill H.

I ordered the Pad Se Ew to go and arrived five minutes after calling. It had clearly been prepared hours before. The noodles were all in a little ball covered by aluminum foil, and were dry and cold. Big fail

    (1)
  • Adam D.

Wow, the food here is delicious! And the delivery is super fast. They told me they would have my order delivered within 30 minutes and they arrived within 15-20. I was most impressed over their different menu for each day of the week. That tells me this place values freshness and everything tasted accordingly upon arrival. I went with the red curry chicken and the yellow curry chicken (on the Saturday menu). The egg roll got a little soggy, but the jasmine rice was cooked perfectly. As for the Thai iced tea, it was one of the best I've had. Highly recommended, especially if you're in downtown SLC and don't feel like going out during a snowstorm.

  • Adam C.

Decent, cheap hole in the wall Thai place in SLC. Good prices, friendly staff but not much room to sit. For the price and the city, it's probably a great deal and if I wanted to grade on a curve I might give it another star or so.

    (3)
  • Nina H.

Cute location, thats about all. The food was too expensive for such a tiny portion, I ordered the yellow curry with tofu and I seriously got two pieces of tofu for 11 dollars?? Crazy. Much better Thai food in salt lake.

    (1)
  • Jen W.

Decent lunch special...a big overpriced for the quality and amount. Loved being able to sit outside and take in the view of the park, though.

  • Jay G.

Everything I needed. Authentic Thai food. Short but good menu selection. Small but cozy place. Great for a quick bite or take-away.

    (4)
  • Scott P.

Good stuff and just okay stuff: I did love having very tasty brown rice as an option. The brown rice went particularly well with the Chicken and Yellow Curry. Ekamai was speedy and I found a nice place to sit outside. I was not particularly impressed with the Tom Kha Chicken... the broth was bland. I am used to Thai food that packs a little more punch and flavor. Maybe it was an off day?

  • Kyle K.

My drunken noodles (ordered Thai spicy) were excellent, with an unexpected sweet-hot curry flavor. I needed 4 glasses of water and a root beer to calm the fire that reached from the tip of my tongue to the back of my throat. Yum. The wife's -- not so great. She ordered a tofu curry. Rather than veggies slowly cooked and simmered in curry for hours, she got nearly raw veggies, and nearly cold tofu, with curry liquid drizzled over top. The curry lacked the depth of flavor she was expecting, and it's certainly no fun to eat cold tofu. The location is swell (particularly on a warm late spring afternoon) and the folks working at the downtown location were friendly and helpful. I guess the advice is go for something premade, or the noodles.

  • Sam S.

Ekamai Thai downtown is great. I've eaten here four or five times and the food has always been great. This location isn't much to look at and there isn't a lot of seating, but if you walk in with a hungry stomach you won't walk out disappointed. For the record when it comes to Thai my tastes center around curries and my favorite is the yellow curry. Although I've eaten at Ekamai several times I have only had one dish, the yellow curry with chicken and veggies. I tend to be a creature of habit and when I find something I like I stick with it. The yellow curry at Ekamai is delicious and equally importantly perhaps, it is consistently delicious -- I have not been disappointed by any meals I've eaten here. Consistency is important to me because it shows that a restaurant knows what their doing and I know that when I eat at consistent restaurants I will always get a great meal for my money. When it comes to value I think Ekamai is a good value for the money and their portions are generous. Thee Ekamai lunch menu may be slightly more expensive then other Thai restaurants I've been to, but the quality of the food is worth the additional expense in my opinion. If you are looking for a new Thai place you should go here. Trust me! Go try Ekamai Thai and then come back and write your own review. Yum yum!

  • Ashton S.

I absolutely live this place. Sitting outside on a beautiful summer evening, nothing beats it. A new thing they have done is add specials to their rotating menu so if you aren't in the mood curry, you now have a variety of other foods to choose from like drunken noodles! Come down and enjoy the atmosphere and wonderful food!

  • Dana S.

my boyfriend and i shared a combo plate here for lunch yesterday. got white rice, yellow chicken curry and beef mussaman curry. everything was good. all premade. for a place that reminded me of a food court type of place, it was very good. we were satisfied and full even after sharing. i would go back but would def try finding another place first.

    (3)
  • Brett T.

I read a few mixed reviews for Ekamai, but love to try new places. It's also important to note that I like Thai food, but I'm not an expert. That said, I'm not a fan. I especially did not like the yellow curry. The chicken was overlooked and the curry was almost tasteless. My daughter had the coconut soup and thought it was the best she has eaten. I think that is the only reason I wouldn't give this place a one star. So see what you think. It may be great, or it may not.

  • Stella S.

Why is this place popular???? Sure it's cute and cheap and the people may be nice, but the food is crappy. They make a huge batch of curries in the early afternoon, and keep it heated all day so by dinner time you're eating something that's been sitting out all day. Gross. They also serve their food in styrofoam containers which bring a terrible flavor out. They microwave their "amazing" coconut stick rice, I don't even own a microwave at home. If I cared to have my food microwaved I'd do it myself. I don't need to pay someone $6 to microwave a meal for me. I also ordered a made-to-order noodle dish as the meat that was in it seriously tasted like dog food. Which was fine for my dog, cuz I fed it all to him. Would've much rather saved the extra $2 as he had already had dinner. My advice? Skip this place. Actually, skip all the restaurants on this block. None of them are good at all.

  • Johnny V.

I'm a curry lover. Found many in SLC that really are worth every penny. Ekamai is #1 in price for taste and expectation! Come to find out they have ISIS Wallet... What is better than having the urban dinning experience and looking cool paying with your phone!!

    (4)
  • Isabelle S.

Reading the reviews, it sounded like this place would be decent but it's only so-so. I ordered online so I might not have seen the whole menu, but I was surprised they didn't have pad Thai available. The food was good but I think it would've tasted better if I was hungrier. I did takeout and ordered the green chicken curry special and pad siew. Good, but I've had better and kinda wish I went somewhere else.

If not for yelp I never would have tried Ekamai. This cute little place is downtown just north of Pioneer Park. It's a quaint little place with very amicable staff and tasty food. Sam V. suggested the drunken noodles with beef, and it did not disappoint. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and the pinch of spices they put in the corner is perfect if you like a little kick. If not, just avoid that corner. This is simply delicious. They have a simple menu, usually they have various curries as their daily specials. It is reasonably priced, though the portions are a tad on the small side. Their thai tea was a bit sweet for me, but overall the meal was flavorful and enjoyable. Parking is hit and miss, but usually you won't find a problem.

  • Nate S.

I want to try everything on a first visit, but I've neither the gut nor the coin for it. Fortunately, this little lunch counter across from the park offers combo options. And when the dude suggested drunken noodles I perked up pronto. Sadly, when I said, "Okay, noodles and the yellow curry for the $9 combo," he revealed that noodles aren't a combo option. Fine, give me noodles and a side of yellow curry. The noodles rang in at $9.95, the curry was another $3-4. No rice. With tip I got my food for $16 bucks, and the slightly gritty curry was way too much like something I might make on a really lazy evening. The noodles were tasty and full of veggies, but weirdly there was a giant mound of chile flakes accumulated in one corner, not distributed throughout. This is one of those reviews where when I get to the end I want to subtract a star from my initial rating. Since it was my first visit I won't, but I'm not convinced there will be a second.

This place knows how to treat their customers! The owner welcomed us right when we walked into the place. "have you been here before?" we hadn't! But we'll be back. Awesome food, Awesome service. Great place!

Excellent Thai. Not the best spot for Thai in SLC, I'm told, but seemingly on everyone's top 3. A lot to love here. Awesome prices. A nice-sized lunch for $7. The menu is small, but that's cool because it literally rotates daily. The service is quick and incredibly friendly. The curries and other options are fresh and tasty. They clearly take no short cuts with the preparation or ingredients. It's apparent that everything is prepared from scratch. Bravo! The Thai Ice Coffee is perhaps a bit over-sweet, but that is possibly a deficiency of mine and not of the coffee itself. Small spot. Maybe 6 bar stools inside. Otherwise, sit on one of their outdoor tables, or in Pioneer Park across the street. Quick, inexpensive, fresh and made with skill and love. A really nice find.

  • Anna E.

Stopped in here during a work trip. It was sort of cafeteria style, but you could also have something made to order. However, I didn't realize this until afterwards. The place is tiny, so I ended up taking it to go. I had the yellow chicken curry with brown rice and it was pretty good. A tad on the bland side, but for Thai in the middle of Salt Lake City, I can't complain!

    (3)
  • Le T.

Ekamai is small in size, but big on flavors and value. One of "SLC's Best" from Salt Lake magazine, the curries are homemade in a tiny kitchen. A two-item sampler will cost you about 8 bucks, well worth it and you'll go home full. They also offer brown rice, which most places don't. Recommend the Yellow or Red Curry...but almost everything is good there. Recommend if... A) You want a little spice on a cold day, curry will warm you up quick! B) A homeless dude in Pioneer Park pissed you off..in case buy him the hottest curry and smother it in Sriracha (that will teach him). C) You love home-cooked Asian food.

  • Vida A.

This is for delivery food only as i have never dined here and im not impressed. Not even the right food. No silverware, soy sauce, napkins, nothing! The food arrived not even warm. I ordered tom kha gai and i got spicy chicken soup full of oil. The pad thai was bland. Not impressed

When I find myself in the Pioneer Park area around lunch time, I usually find myself opening the door to this tiny treasure-trove of taste minutes later. Each day they rotate 6 different combo menu items, and I always have trouble deciding. If you find yourself being indecisive, no need to be shy, just ask for a sample! The staff, especially the owner, Woot, are super-friendly and are happy to explain any of the dishes to you. I usually find myself ordering the two item combo--which comes with an egg roll and literally a gigantic mound of rice--all served up in a no-fuss styrofoam container. You have a choice of white rice or brown.. well, actually more deep purple with no hint of brown. I've been meaning to ask about that. Either way, it's pretty tasty rice. My only qualm is that I'm left craving for more curry and far less rice. I mean, seriously, I have never seen such a large serving of rice! I've yet to eat more than half of it and probably never will, unless I'm carbo-loading for a long hike or bike ride. My recommendations so far: -Tom Yum Chicken; a delicious soup with very unique flavors (served ONLY on Fridays) -Massamun Curry Beef; just a great beef curry (served everyday) -Thai Iced Tea; honestly the only reason I come in sometimes. Literally the best I've ever had. It just has this extra zing to it. Just talking about makes me crave it. Perfect for a sunny day. I'm sure I will update that list once I've had a chance to sample more, which I fully intend on doing. I have yet to try the drunken noodles or pad seiw, which Woot said is a must-try. Now, as far as seating, when I said tiny, I do not exaggerate. Inside, you have maybe 6 stools along the counters not occupied by the kitchen area. Outside, there, of course, is the park (if you're up for dodging collections of homeless), but there are also a few benches along the street that you can plop down at and enjoy your containers of deliciousness. Obviously this becomes an issue when you're coming for the warmth of hearty food on a cold day. If that's the case, I'd suggest you plan on taking it to go. Overall, a warm atmosphere cooped up in a small kitchen, offering great Thai food. Well deserving of their "SLC's Best" title from Salt Lake Magazine.

I like the idea of Ekamai, but not the execution. $9 plus tax for small portions of so-so Thai food. Not a fan. Much better options around, though if you're in a hurry, not very hungry, and looking to spend your tax refund on Thai food, this is the place.

We always stop be here on our yearly Utah trip. A little mom and pop Thai place that serves great Thai food inexpensively. The red curry and pad see ew are great. The owner and staff are super friendly and nice.

  • Matt J.

I was pretty disappointed with my visit here. I got the massaman curry which is my go-to Thai dish. For the money the portion size was pretty small and my curry was bland and uninteresting. The potatoes were undercooked as well. I tried spicing it up a bit with some of the spices at the counter but to no avail. I was also turned off by the use of a microwave to heat food...but in a small place I wonder if they are limited in food preparation options? The location is very good and the place is small and inviting. Unfortunately that is the best of my experience. It was worth checking out but I wont be back here on my own accord.

Eh? Thai food near downtown Salt Lake City, just the fact that this little city is starting to have more variety it definitely makes it more intriguing with each visit. Who would have thought you find Thai food in this part of town especially near Pioneer Park. This isn't your typical whole in the wall joint. I found this place by accident as we wondered the streets of downtown. Odd that on my way to downtown I kept being asked what was for dinner. And up to the point of reaching this place within two blocks I had no clue. Until out of the blue I saw the Ekamai sign, quickly I directed the driver to turn left onto 300 South. Parking is easily available especially on a "busy" Friday night. I would have given this place 5 stars if it had a bigger dinning area or a wider variety of items. But for the food we ordered, the dishes were excellent and authentic. We ordered the drunken noodle with shrimp, yellow curry, and soup. The meal was perfect for this cold evening, they have a bar style sitting where you can stare out the window at passing crowd. This can be a nice little spot during the summer when its warmer. Glad to see the city have a little more spice, great food, friendly service, reasonable prices. Absolute best in the area of downtown, look forward to hitting this spot again.

Love this place. Every time I make a SLC airport run from Park City I have lunch here. It's great when it's nice outside and you can eat at the tables, on the curb, in the park, perhaps you can climb a tree and eat up there. Regardless, this place is awesome. Highly suggest it. Quick, cheap, great.

The perfect fast and cheap curry place. Solid food, family owned feel, and good portion control.

Terrible compared to My Thai, not to mention it is more expensive and you don't get as much food. No flavor, no options on heat level. First and last time going here.

Adorable small place, quick, and lots of options! The place has only a two small bar areas near the window to sit at but it's enough seating for a small lunch crowd. Delicious masaman beef curry/pad see ew!

Stumbled into this place to ballast the waffles next door. Glad I did. Best Drunken Noodles I've had, & that includes a celebrated Thai place in NYC. Steaming hot, full of flavor, utterly delicious, held like a tiny edible heaven in a greasy cardboard box in your lap. Small, unpretentious hole in the wall with character. Get yourself some Drunken Noodles, then go next door & get a torpedo waffle with fruit & whipped cream on top.

I went here for lunch one day since it's only a block from my work. They were super fast at getting my food and made it really easy to take it outside and enjoy my food outside or elsewhere. I was a bit disappointed with the food. I got the mussaman curry, which was ok. Felt like they didn't give you much either (or am I just a pig?) I've tried mussaman at half a dozen other places- this one was mid-bottom of my list.

So I've counted how many times I've been to Ekamai in the past two months, and I've basically racked up a free meal. I think that should count for something. The main reason I've been back so many times, due to Diana Y's review, the drunken noodles. They are the most delicious thing I have had in a long while. The noodles are cooked to order, perfect amount of softness and texture, the broccoli is fresh, but perfectly cooked, and the flavor, simply delicious. This is my comfort food. It reminds me of my mom's cooking, but a smidge better (I hope she doesn't read this), and I will crave it constantly. I also like that they already include red pepper flakes in a little corner of your noodles in case you want it to have an extra kick, which I always do. If you don't... avoid that area or tell them in advance you don't need it. I love drunken noodles.

This is a great place for a quick delicious meal. Unlike other reviewers I have always found the food at Ekamai to be fresh. The stand outs on the menu are the yellow curry chicken and the massaman beef. The only reason I give this 4 instead of 5 stars is the menu is small and limited. Overall a good fresh meal for a good price. It doesn't hurt that Woot treats everyone like family either. :)

What a trendy little restaurant Ekamai is. This place was made for downtown summers while frolicking around Pioneer Park or stopping by during your lunch break to grab something quick to go. They have a nice small menu and a daily special where you can sample until you find the one that you like best. The portions are suitable for a light meal that is packed with flavor. If you decide to eat here, there is extremely limited outdoor seating but if all else fails just head to the park to enjoy your meal. Oh, and the owner's name is Woot! I found that pretty neat and super friendly person he is. Note(s): You have your choice of white or brown (actually purple) rice, how nice is that?

Yes, I got to eat here the other day. Yes, it was delicious. I want you to read the review that Jeffrey S wrote. I was there with him so, all of that applies to me too, but then I want to add to that the fact that, we ordered a 2 item plate to share and well, I think he only got about 1-2 bites of each thing because I elbowed him out of the rest. He was very patient, but HEY, I know what I like! AND, that in a very unladylike way, I licked every drop of peanut sauce out of the little sample they gave us. That says something about that sauce. And....maybe something about me too, but we won't explore that. YUM!! I want more. I think I'll be dreaming about that for a while. The cool thing is, the menu changes per day of the week, so there's so many more things I need to schedule in!!

Just had lunch here today. Got the yellow curry, which was awesome!! Wish they had a red curry chicken dish though.

A focused menu, and easy to take away. Parking can be a headache on occasion, but great view of the park from the benches out front.

Small chic restaurant. Yummy food comes with affordable price. You can try samples before you pick your curry. The boss is a very friendly and talkative Asian man. Definitely, you cannot forget about their dessert, Mango on the Sticky Rice, is one of best Mango on the Sticky Rice that I tasted so far(says so my boyfriend too). Affordable tasty food + friend service + nice environment is a win-win situation. =)

A coworker and I ended up going to Ekamai for dinner and came away very impressed. The two Thai curry's of the night were delicious and we were immediately offered tastes of each of them upon entering. One thing to note that while there are tables on the sidewalk out front, and there is some limited "bar" esq seating inside, but it's an order at the counter place vs sit down restaurant.

Today was my first time visiting Ekamai. It's a short walk from my office and I thought I'd give it a whirl since it was in my foraging radius. I loved the established building for the "cart food" type restaurant. Since I usually take my food back to my desk, it was fine with me that they didn't have much space for dining. I am excited to go there on a warmer sunny day to make use of the sidewalk seating. Overall the massaman beef was great and so was the purple rice (yum!). Just the right amount of food in the single bowl, and they had a good selection of fancy and foreign sodas.

  • Kristy M.

I was surprised to be disappointed in Ekamai. Maybe it's because we were there in the evening and they were wrapping up for the day, but the Massaman was almost inedible. The portions were also very small, even if it had been lunchtime. Unfortunately, we won't be returning.

I love that this is a nice, quick place I can grab lunch that's within walking distance of my office in SLC. I have been there twice, and opted for the purple rice both times. As a hater of brown rice, I went ahead and tried it anyways, based on other yelp reviews. So glad I did. It is so good, not sticky, not grainy or gross like brown rice can be. For some reason, I always get antsy when ordering at place for the first time, so I just spit out "sweet and sour chicken" the first time I went there because it was the only name I recognized. It was a good dish, but the curry meals are where it's at. The second time I went in, I asked about the spice in the curry (sensitive stomach..) and Woot let me sample the chicken and beef curries. I found the beef to be a little more mild, but still spiced and delicious, so I got that. So. Good. It's the perfect lunch for a cold-ish day. Not to mention that a one item combo is just over five bucks, which is a price point that is really difficult to come by downtown, even with generic fast food options. Oh, and I also tried the thai iced tea the first time I was there. It was a bit too sweet for my liking, and I didn't enjoy it as much as other reviewers have.

Hmmm...I decided to try Ekamai because 1) it got fairly good reviews on Yelp, 2) it was still open, and 3) judging from the website, it seemed pretty cheap. So when I got there, I was a bit surprised because a) it's really, REALLY small (yeah, I know, others have commented on its smallness, but you really don't get the idea until you actually walk in) and b) it didn't seem like they were going to be doing any cooking, as the food was already just sitting there, perhaps even without heat? (And I'm not particularly keen on establishments that just let food sit there, going unfresh and/or even rotting in the process.) So that really caught me off guard, and I guess to diffuse the awkwardness if you will the owner (Woot) asked me if I wanted to try anything, and, of course, before I could say anything, he, in his infinite hospitality, I suppose, had had the guys behind the counter prepare six samples of everything that was already there. So the good and bad (bad first). Bad: Of the six different things they had me try, I really only liked one. I kept trying them over and over and over again, hoping that I could learn to like one of the others, so I can at least get a double item combo, but no, I just couldn't. Good: The fact that Woot had allowed me to try everything before I made a selection really attests to their customer service. True, there wasn't much I liked, but at least they gave me an opportunity to find that out so I COULD make an educated decision. Unlike in many other cases in the past where I ordered something THINKING that it would be good (like how can anyone screw up a Pad See Ew?), then realizing later that it was just god awful! (And by then, it would have been too late to get my money back.) So the one thing I ended up picking was the pork, simply based on the sauce. Well, the pork itself really wasn't all that flavorful, and it seemed kind of pre-made? Then again, the brown (no, I'm sorry, purple) rice that came with it was really good. So that was a treat. I don't know. In conclusion, I would think if you wanted purple rice, this would be the place to be. Also, you never have to worry about picking the wrong thing, as it is all transparent to you before you make your selection. But no to 5 out of 6? Hmmm...seems like a bad grade to me. So 3 stars for the GREAT customer service and purple rice?

I'm not a huge fan of Thai but this resto does it for me and it's most likely going to remain my go to place for Thai. It's right next to Bruges Waffles and is pretty much the same layout. Small interior with some patio sitting that's great in summer but not so great in winter. They have really great prices like a 2 combo with rice for like $8. They change their specials up regularly and they have this mango desert dish with rice that will blow you away. Who knew rice and mango could be so dang good? The owner, i forgot his name, is really cool too. He was really attentive, wanted to help the whole time, asked us our names and invited us back and was really personable. Good people, good food, cool atmosphere so go hit it up.

Pros: Reasonable prices, delicious food, restaurant is small but fitting for the area (outdoor seating), friendly staff Cons: only certain items are available each day, depending on which restaurant you visit Visiting from out of town this past week and already ordered takeout the last two days...REAL TREAT!

I'm on business travel in SLC and I wanted to find a place to go by myself that wasn't a regular restaurant. After all, who wants to be that guy eating by himself at a big table? This place is perfect for a quick meal to eat either right in front of the place or to take out. I went at lunch and since there were a good amount of people, everything was fresh. It doesn't look like a lot of food when you get it, but it really is quote filling. The brown rice is killer; full of flavor like brown rice should be. I had the Massaman curry and the vegetables in peanut sauce; both were delicious and very satiating. My only complaint is that there really wasn't a lot of spice in the food, but it was otherwise very flavorful and tasty. I'll be going back while I'm here!

Ekamai Thai was my saving grace during our visit to SLC. I love that it feels like a hole in the wall on the inside, but looks all trendy on the outside. My favorite thing is the price point - at the time, it was $5 for rice and one entree (no extra charge for brown rice). I loved their massaman beef curry - there were large chunks of carrots and potatoes that were nicely cooked and the beef was generous and tender. I also loved their Thai Iced Tea... best I've ever had. Not too sweet and it actually tastes like tea (while most Thai places just load up their Thai Iced Tea with ice and sweetened condensed milk). The day after we visited, they raised the prices by 50 cents. :( However, it is still very fair and I'd definitely recommend Ekamai Thai if you are looking for delicious and affordable Thai food.

I am a huge fan of Thai food and this place is pretty good. The atmosphere is awesome and eating outside is great. It can get pretty busy around lunch time so be prepared to have a little bit of a wait. There isn't really anywhere to eat inside so you may have to take your food to go. The reason I give this place 3 stars is because of the limited menu and the curry seems watered down. Unfortunately it doesn't have a strong thai flavor which is what i really like about curry. This place is still worth a try!

We ate there in April 2010 and forgot to review it but now we have friends going to SLC and we enjoyed this place so much that we wanted to tell them about it. It is kind of a hole in the wall with limited seating but the food was delicious. Among the best Thai food I've had, and I've been to Thailand...

Ekamai is the bomb! They serve up some awesome Thai food! I normally order one of their 2 item combo plates and get a curry dish and one of their other dishes. Everything I've had there is really good. Their ingredients are fresh and taste great! Some of my favorites are the mussamun curry with beef, the pad pa ram, and the yellow curry with chicken. The egg rolls are really good and I always get their brown rice. The owner, Woot, is a great guy! After only going there twice he recognized me and remembered my name...and I wasn't the only one. It's clear that he really enjoys getting to know his customers. The have limited seating inside, but during the warmer months you can sit out front or they have seating up on the roof as well. They're opening up a new, larger location in Sugar House on 21st South across from the park so I'm excited that they will be closer to where I live! If you like Thai food, you have to try this spot!

This place was probably really 3.5 for me, but I decided to round up. The food was good, not blowing my mind great, but good. Nothing that I got really stands out in my mind several days later, but I left satisfied and happy. The atmosphere is also good, with little bar stools pressed up against a brick wall. I will almost certainly go back to this place, not because there aren't better places but because its easy, well-located and comfortable.

Ekamai is good for a quick, no-fuss bite of Thai food--especially after the downtown SLC farmer's market, which takes place right across the street from the restaurant. My husband and I stopped in on a whim last Saturday and enjoyed red curry. I was surprised at how fresh it tasted given the buffet-style serving. Of course, curries often gain flavor with a bit of time, but I was pleasantly surprised that the veggies and meat tasted so fresh, too. However, I would prefer more curry and less rice. I generally do not enjoy eating mountains of carbs. The service is friendly. The price seems a bit high for the portion sizes. Then again, the portion I was served was teeny-tiny compared to what my husband got. Maybe they are inconsistent? Maybe there was a mistake? My husband and I returned while downtown again, but this time, the only curries on offer were Massaman and yellow. While I appreciate the ever-changing menu at Ekamai, I find it odd to serve Massaman and yellow with no other curry options. Both of those curries tend to please people who like milder or sweeter flavors. I would like it better if they kept a red or green on option, too. Maybe Massaman and red or something. We decided to eat elsewhere because of the limited options on this second trip. Regarding the stars: I was torn between the 2 and 3. I mean, for what this place is, it is good. If I could rate it 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 that might be more accurate.

I LOVE this place! It was the second Thai restaurant I had ever tried, so at first I just thought I was a little biased. But then my husband and I started eating at many of the Thai places in Utah and Ekamai is still our favorite. We continue to try new Thai places, just to see, and because Ekamai is kind of a drive for us, but nothing ever compares. Definitely try the drunken noodle! And I don't know what it is, but their Thai iced tea is the best I've had.

Seemed like all the food was gone when I got there. For my take-out dinner order at 6:30pm the vegetables went straight from freezer bag (not fresh) into boiling water. The massaman beef had 5 small beef slices and two tiny potato quarters. Taste was bland. Not going back.

Best coconut mango sticky rice in town, and possibly anywhere. And believe me, I've tried it everywhere!!! It's quite a large serving, and about $7 if memory serves me, but it it SO worth the splurge. Share with someone you love! You won't regret it.

If reviews were written on the kindness of the proprietors, this joint would rank quite a lot higher than it does based on the food. The owner/operator was a really nice guy named Woot. We went to grab take out at about 6pm on a Wednesday night, there was one other party there, eating in 3 of the 6 or 7 chairs available. When we approached the counter, we found 6 dishes, in heat wells. Unfortunately, only 3 of the 6 actually had any food left in them. The 3 that did have food left in the well were quite obviously not fresh. When you order, you get 2 scoops of rice, and a scoop of two of the curries available on that day, and a 2 1/2 inch spring roll. I, unfortunately got the spring roll that had been there for some time, while my girlfriend got a fresh one. I got a beef curry and a spicy brown curry, while my girlfriend got veggies with peanut sauce and yellow chicken curry. Mine was packed full of raw, crunchy onions and boiled potatoes. Hers was taken from some Tupperware and boiled while we waited and some peanut sauce was added to the top. The yellow curry was dry and old. Stale stale stale. It's my guess that the food is prepared in the early afternoon or late morning, and it sits there until you buy it. Maybe this would be a better place to go for lunch, but based on the boring, low quality food we received for the dinner, I'll not go back.

I have a hard time with any restaurant until I know 'my dish'. You know, the one nobody does better no matter how many you try. The trick to finding a good place is trying the right dish and that's not easy in one shot. I've been here a few times and have always liked their curries and the brown rice. What will send me back here with cravings is the Drunken Noodles and Mango Sticky Rice. Neither have been easy to find in Salt Lake, or at least not worth going back for but they do it well. I feel like a lucky lady for finding two favorites in one place. Now if only I could find a good key lime pie......

The owners are, indeed, incredibly nice and friendly. Their food isn't half bad either. It's a little on the sweet side, but I still enjoyed it. More importantly, unlike most Thai places in town, I was not wretchedly sick afterwards. I did not like the Thom Kha, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Massman curry and the yellow curry. The best part was the interesting and very yummy brown rice which was actually purple. The prices are reasonable, with lunch specials around $5, and a combo at about $8. Overall, a good quick bite in the neighborhood when you're not up for the rather heavy choices and long waits (Caputo's and Bruge) next door.

This is a great place for a quick lunch. The lunch specials are almost always worth trying, but I usually skip them and go straight to the drunken noodles (you can order them off the menu on the back wall). The noodles are perfectly cooked and spiced (extra spicy if you ask), with fresh vegetables and grilled pork and tons of basil. They are the best I've found in SLC. The limited seating options can be a little annoying during the lunch rush, though, so I recommend stopping by after 1:00 p.m.

I stopped here after an 8 hour road trip from CA and couldn't have been happier with this hole-in-the-wall gem. Super affordable for some of the best Thai food I've ever had! I got the tom yum soup with brown rice (their brown rice is a rich in color and flavor wild rice-yum!) and a roasted coconut juice. Definitely bummed to leave this place behind once I left SLC.

I started my Ekamai experience with delivery. Actually, I've never been inside either location. Up until the last two deliveries (and there have been a lot!) I've never had a complaint. The food is fresh and fast (and hot). Although trying to communicate over the phone with the employees is always a challenge, the drivers find their way to my apartment, no problem. The last two times I've had Ekamai, the total damages: 2 forgotten drinks, cold food, lower-quality than their usual high standards; then the last time, the driver (new) couldn't find our apt. It's 600 N and despite calling us four times for directions, she was never able to get out of the south side of the city. So, over two hours after I initially ordered the food (usually takes 40mins on average to get here) my boyfriend and I left to go eat out. We hadn't heard from the driver in 45 mins so we cut our losses. We got a call from the driver as we were being seated that she was at our apartment, but didn't know the number (did she not write down our SIMPLE address???). We kindly told her we were eating out instead. After our dinner, we tried calling Ekamai, but when we asked to speak to a manager, we were put on an endless hold. My boyfriend and I order Ekamai at least once a week, and with that kind of loyalty, it disappoints me that a manager wouldn't even take our call.

I stopped by Ekamai for a quick bite before heading to a concert. We were quickly greeted by the owner - Woot, and he graciously offered up a few samples of his tasty fare. I was pleased with my meal, especially since it was budget-friendly. Woot even came out and had a nice chat with my boyfriend and I during the meal. I will definitely go back. Thanks Woot!

Stumbled upon this place as I was going to Bruges Waffles and Frites right next door. When I finally went back and tried it I was pleasantly surprised. When I visited Salt Lake City, I had no idea I would find absolutely delicious Thai food. This small family-run restaurant is very small, but it has so much heart. The papaya salad is amazing, and I highly recommend it. The drunken noodles are also good.

Food: They offer daily specials. I ordered the yellow chicken curry and a thai iced tea. The yellow chicken was ok but I do like that they offer samples to try before ordering. service: The staff is very friendly. Overall, I give this place a 3.5 for the service and the food.

Thai food in SLC? You say no way... but I'm here to tell you yes way. Good food and awesome small restaurant atmosphere. Food is reasonably priced and full of flavor. There are a limited number of choices, but the owners are very accommodating to special orders. So good I even came back for seconds.
